Adapted from Sidney Lumet's classic ''12 Angry Men,'' Russian director Nikita Mikhalkov's courtroom drama version, thinks aloud about today's life, about the need to hear the next of kin and help that person before its too late.

• 12 characters - 12 truths.

The story of 12 Jurors discussing a verdict to pass on an 18-year-old Chechen boy whether he is guilty of the 1st-degree murder of his step-father - an officer of the Russian army.

The action of the picture unveils in one room - a gym adjusted for jury deliberations. One by one, each man takes center stage to confront, connect and confess while the accused awaits a verdict. Slowly the tide of opinion turns, as the jurors begin to realize their decision will forever change the course of another person's life. As they deliberate, the accused revisits his heartbreaking journey through war in a series of powerful flashbacks.

Nikita Mikhalkov has revealed that his film was a criticism of former Russian President Boris Yeltsin's decision of waging a war in Chechnya: ''I think that it was a tragic mistake. It was based on incompetence, on a lack of culture, on the idea that in two days, the war would be over. They had no understanding of where they'd ended up, that it was a completely different situation. It's a mistake on the same level that the world is making in Iraq. (...) This picture came out of our life, and I'd like it to return to our life.''
