Based on Peter Turner's memoir, the film follows the playful but passionate relationship between Peter Turner (Jamie Bell) and the eccentric Academy Award®-winning actress Gloria Grahame (Annette Bening) in 1979 Liverpool.

Gloria Grahame was the Hollywood leading lady at the heart of several 1950s hit films including The Big Heat and Oklahoma! She won the Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Bad and the Beautiful.

Liverpool, 1979: What starts as a vibrant affair between a legendary femme fatale and her young lover quickly grows into a deeper relationship, with Peter being the one person Gloria allows herself to turn to for comfort and strength.

Their passion and lust for life is tested to the limits by events beyond their control.

In late September 1981, Peter Turner received a phone call that would change his life forever. His former lover, Hollywood actress Gloria Grahame, had collapsed in a Lancaster hotel. She refused medical attention and instead reached out to Turner, who at Grahame's request took her to his warm if the chaotic family home in Liverpool. The pair had met a few years previously, their paths crossing in a Primrose Hill guesthouse in which they were lodging. Turner was an aspiring actor, Grahame a fading star.
