About the Super Dark Times 💬
SUPER DARK TIMES is a story of friendship, guilt, suspicion, and youth, set in the 1990s, a time before the internet, cellphones and social media.
- Teenage lives in the era prior to the Columbine High School Massacre.
Zach (Owen Campbell) and Josh (Charlie Tahan) are best friends growing up in a leafy Upstate New York suburb in the 1990s, with stuff like Clinton, button-up dresses and Nirvana going on in the background. Teenage life revolves around hanging out, looking for kicks, bike rides, video games, navigating first love and vying for popularity.
Enjoying their normal lives in mid-'90s suburbia, Zach and Josh are best friends with numerous shared interests, chief of which is an attraction to their classmate Allison (Elizabeth Cappuccino). One seemingly routine day, along with two other friends, Zach and Josh borrow the latter's older brother's prized samurai sword to goof around in the local park. But the afternoon soon spirals out of control.
Gruesome accident leads to a cover-up, the secret drives a wedge between them and propels them down a rabbit hole of escalating paranoia and violence. Wracked with guilt, Zach struggles to assimilate back into high school life, even as Allison begins to show a romantic interest in him. During the day, Zach gets by as best he can, but at night he is caught between wet dreams and nightmares. The situation gets even more complicated once Zach notices a disturbingly off-balance change in Josh's behavior.
Each young man processes the tragedy in his own way until circumstances grow increasingly complex and spiral into violence.
SUPER DARK TIMES is the feature film debut from director Kevin Phillips.
