About the Jonathan 💬
- He was born with a condition, science learned to control it.
In this sci-fi-tinged drama, Ansel Elgort plays two brothers living very separate lives - inside the same body. Previously content to live life in shifts with one another, their delicate balance is ruined when they become emotionally involved with the same woman (Suki Waterhouse).
- DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
I live in New York City, a place like any large metropolis that attracts people with secrets because of the anonymity it affords. Part of the thrill of living here is imagining the thoughts and feelings of the person sitting across from you on the subway or the dramas being played out behind the millions of closed doors. Jonathan is one such character. He is the solitary, unassuming man crossing the street or living down the hall who longs for human connection but clings to the comfort of his isolation and routine. He also possesses an extraordinary secret.
JONATHAN is a science fiction fable that explores identity and longing through the story of two brothers with a unique sibling bond. With JONATHAN my co-writer, Peter Nickowitz, and I wanted to explore the nature of intimacy: the jealousy, codependency, safety, danger, anger, and affection that come with extreme closeness. We imagined a condition in which two brothers are simultaneously as close and as far away as two people can be (they can never physically touch). Theirs is the ultimate longing. The film is limited to Jonathan's POV. John exists in the video recordings and messages he leaves for Jonathan, and in the traces, he leaves behind. These traces - a TV left on, a black eye, a dirty plate - represent Jonathan's only physical means of connection with John.
JONATHAN is about the longing to connect with another human being, which I believe resonates with today's culture in which some of us feel simultaneously more connected and more divided than ever. The fact that the brothers' relationship is mediated by and dependent upon technology reflects the ways in which we find, meet, and communicate with each other in today's world. Ultimately, I hope audiences will be moved and entertained by Jonathan's unique plight. Like all of us, he longs for contact, affection, and love. But it is impossible for him to be with the one he truly loves.
