In the south-west corner of Poland, far from any town or city, the Oder River curls sharply, creating a tiny inlet. The banks are matted with wild grass and shrouded by towering pine and oak trees. The only people who regularly trek to the area are fishermen - the inlet teems with perch and pike and sun bass. On a cold December day in 2000, three friends were casting there when one of them noticed something floating by the shore. At first, he thought it was a log, but as he drew closer he saw what looked like hair...

Based on the 2008 New Yorker article ''True Crimes - A Postmodern Murder Mystery'' by David Grann. Jim Carrey stars as a detective investigating the murder of a slain businessman.

Hidden in the archives of the Krakow Police Headquarters, disgraced, aging police officer Tadek (Jim Carrey) is drawn to a cold, unsolved murder case. When he discovers that a thriller written by crime novelist Krystof Kozlov (Marton Csokas) mirrors this same crime, Tadek sees an opportunity to end his career with honor. Tadek begins to track Kozlov and his girlfriend, a mysterious sex-club worker (Charlotte Gainsbourg). As his obsession with Kozlov grows, Tadek descends into a deadly underworld of sex, lies, and corruption to find the shocking, deadly truth.
