• When everything collapses, only hope remains.

38-year-old Lee Jung-Soo (Jung-woo Ha), an ordinary car dealer, is his way home with a birthday cake for his daughter. As he drives into Hado Tunnel on Highway 18, an unbelievable thing happens; the tunnel collapses on him. Minutes later, the only thing he can see around him is concrete wreckage, and all he has to sustain himself is 82% of his phone's battery, two bottles of water, and his daughter's birthday cake.

• The Tunnel has collapsed. A rescue for one man.

July 7, 14:50 - All eyes are on news channels...

Outside, this breaking news creates a media frenzy and a thoughtless reporter even airs a live phone interview with Jung-Soo, using up his mobile phone batteries. An emergency response team is immediately organized to rescue him and tries to keep the media under control. As it becomes a national concern, the government promises full support for the rescue.

• Buried. He only has 35 days to survive.

Dae-Kyung (Dal-su Oh), leader of the rescue team, tries various means to access the tunnel, but work proceeds at a frustratingly slow pace. Meanwhile, Jung-soo's wife Se-Hyun (Doona Bae) sends him messages of support through the only radio station he can hear under the tunnel, and she keeps up hope that he will return alive.

• 35 days, a man's desperate struggle to survive.

While Jung-Soo struggles to survive, a series of ridiculous blunders delays the rescue operation and threatens his chances to make it out alive.

• How long can you survive?

Soon, he runs out of food, water, and phone batteries, making him totally incommunicado. Days pass without any success and people start to lose hope or interest in rescuing him.

''The miners in Chile were rescued on the 69th day. But that involved 33 people. Additionally, their food supply was not a problem. In a case like this without any food, the longest record of survival is 19 days. And with the extremely disturbing cold, on top of any injuries, it would be even more difficult, right?''

• How much is a life worth?

Ultimately, the slow rescue effort causes a setback to the construction of a nearly complete tunnel nearby, and public opinion becomes divided over whether to proceed with a rescue effort that seems doomed to fail. Having already passed the longest survival record for a disaster, hard decisions are forced on his family while no one knows whether Jung-Soo is dead or alive.
