Eleven-year-old Chala (Armando Valdés Freire) lives with his addict mother Sonia (Yuliet Cruz). In order to provide for the two of them, he raises carrier pigeons and trains fighting dogs with a man who may or may not be his biological father. School provides a stabilizing force in Chala's life, thanks to his close relationship with his spirited sixty-something teacher, Carmela (Alina Rodríguez). One day she becomes ill and must give up the school for a while. The new teacher Maria (Miriel Cejas), unable to understand Chala's behavior, sends him off to a "re-education facility". When Carmela returns, she rebels against this measure and other transformations her class has been subjected to. The relationship between the veteran teacher and the boy grows stronger, but this mutual commitment will jeopardize their continuance at the school.

''There are four things you need to bring up a child: a home, a school, rigor, and affection. But outside that door, there's the street, and a teacher needs to know what's waiting for them out there. In the past, life was clearer, and I knew what I was preparing my students for. Now, the only thing clear to me is what not to prepare them for.''
